DePuy and Stryker Hip Replacement Warning Issued by U.K. Government
The DePuy hip replacement recall happened thanks to artificial joint registries maintained by the governments of Australia and the United Kingdom. These registries track failure rates, and they warn government regulators when devices, such as the ASR XL Acetabular System and ASR Hip Resurfacing System, fail at higher-than-normal rates. Other metal-on-metal hip replacements have shown high failure rates, such as the uncemented DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement. Recently, the U.K. Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) issued another hip replacement warning for a DePuy and Stryker hip replacement.
Combination Hip Replacement Fails at High Rates
Finsbury Orthopaedics (bought by DePuy Orthopaedics) manufactures the MITCH TRH acetabular cup and MITCH TRH modular heads for metal-on-metal total hip replacements, and Stryker Corp. makes the uncemented Accolade femoral stem. These components are designed to work together as a single total hip replacement, but due to the high number of people who suffered hip replacement problems, the MHRA recommended that it should not be used in total hip replacement procedures. The cumulative revision rate for the combination DePuy and Stryker hip replacement is 8.8 percent after four years. By contrast, when it is used in hip resurfacing procedures, the failure rate is only 3.1 percent, so the hip replacement warning doesn’t apply to them.
RLG Advocates for Recipients of Metal-on-Metal Hips
The lesson from the DePuy and Stryker hip replacement warning is that metal-on-metal hip replacements are largely untested and can cause serious problems to recipients. If you have received a metal-on-metal hip replacement, particularly a recalled DePuy one, it’s important to know that the amount of compensation from a hip replacement lawsuit might be greater than what DePuy is willing to offer via its recall reimbursement program. In a lawsuit, a plaintiff can claim damages for full medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, and possibly punitive damages.
